From the Corporate Ladder to Building Something of Our Own

For over a decade, I gave everything I had to companies that weren't mine. Seventy-plus-hour weeks, fast-track promotions, and excellent annual performance reviews—I told myself the long nights, missed dinners, canceled family events, stress, and health issues were an investment. I believed that if I just kept pushing and proving myself, it would all pay off.

Then, at my most recent company—just like the three before it—on an ordinary Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., a company officer walked into my office and said, "Sorry, Kevin, the company has decided to go in a different direction," handing me a severance package effective immediately. That was it. No thank you, no prior notice, no discussion—just, "We decided to go in a different direction. Please gather your personal belongings and follow me out."

Once again, after years of busting my butt, everything boiled down to a folder of paperwork and a polite handshake on the way to the door.

I won't pretend that afternoon didn't sting. But somewhere between packing up my desk and driving home, the sting turned into clarity. I decided right then that I would do whatever it took to never again surrender my future to someone else's org chart.

That same week, my wife, Misty, and I sat down and started building MDK Solution Pros.

Built on What We Learned the Hard Way

We didn't start this business because it sounded easy. We started it because we saw a real gap in our own backyard—property owners across the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Tri-State area who needed honest, dependable land clearing, forestry mulching, excavation, demolition, and hauling services, but couldn't find them.

By the time that fateful Thursday afternoon arrived and showed me how little corporate culture values loyalty, I had already spent an entire career learning how to show up and get the job done right.

Thirty-two years of serving my country taught me integrity and determination. Ten years in the U.S. Marine Corps taught me discipline and leadership. Fourteen years with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and eight years with the Department of Energy taught me how to operate with precision, accountability, and zero tolerance for cutting corners. That is the exact standard I brought with me when I traded a badge and a corporate title for a skid steer and a work truck.

Misty and I built MDK Solution Pros as a true partnership. She brings 25-plus years of experience in broadcast media advertising sales—with top stations including WNKY FOX 40, WBKO 13 ABC, WXIX FOX 19, and WCPO 9 ABC—which taught her how to build trust, market effectively, and manage client relationships the right way. She handles our marketing, advertising, and business operations, all while working full-time in logistics for Nucor/DJJ (The David J. Joseph Company).

With Misty managing the business side and me operating the heavy equipment, we share one singular goal: to deliver work we are proud of and treat every single customer the way we would want to be treated.

Why It Matters

We are no longer chasing promotions on someone else's terms—we are building something of our own that serves our neighbors and carries a name we proudly stand behind.

Every job we take on, we approach as if our own property is on the line. Because for us, in a very real sense, it is.
